European countries argue over exactly which of them is the cradle of the modern Western civilization. In 1972, upon excavation works in the city of Varna, Bulgaria, the golden hoard, assumed to be the oldest gold of mankind, was found by chance. It dates from about the 4th millennium BC. The hoard was found in the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis. The total weight of the ornaments removed from only one of the graves is about one kilogram and a half. The ornaments are Thracian and they have been found on the skeleton of a male of about 45. He was buried with them. The hoard raised enormous interest. Today, it has been shown in countries all over the world so that to be seen by as much people as possible, but its official location is Varna Archeological Museum.
